A Call to Science and Engineering Businesses to Inspire Young Women for International Women’s Day

08 March 2018

Inspire, Motivate & Engage is encouraging science and engineering professionals to become career mentors to young women who are struggling to get their first job in the industry for International Women’s Day.

“Women remain underrepresented in STEM industries, making up only 24% of the sector in the UK. Many companies are working hard to work towards gender equality, but despite this commitment, progress continues to be slow.” Claire Atkinson, CEO at Inspire, Motivate & Engage.

The career mentoring programme matches each participating mentor to a young woman who aspires to work in a similar role. This allows the mentor to share their insights into what the role is like day-to-day, provide advice on their CV and what employers are looking for during an interview

Claire continues “Our career-mentoring programme allows companies to inspire and attract more young women to work into the science and engineering industry, but also use the skills and experience of its staff to aid the growth of the young person.”

The mentoring programme is nationally accredited, so both the mentor and mentee walk away with a recognised award upon completion. The female mentors can achieve a Level 4 in Management & Leadership, learning skills that not only help them to become a better mentor but also a more effective leader, including; Coaching Skills, Giving Effective Feedback, Active Listening, Planning Skills and how to Influence Ethically.

Claire continues: “We are calling for science and engineering professionals to join the programme and heads of business to promote it at an organisational level. It sits well either as a staff Learning & Development offering or a CSR volunteering initiative and we need more companies to lead by example and get involved.”
