The introduction of guidelines on how mobile medical apps will be governed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may be released by the end of the year.
The bipartisan Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act (S.3187) was approved last week, signed by President Barack Obama, allowing the FDAto move ahead with plans to regulate mobile medical apps.
Alongside to the guidelines, the Department of Health and Human Services plan to develop a report on an "appropriate, risk-based regulatory framework pertaining to health information technology, including mobile medical applications, that promotes innovation, protects patient safety and avoids regular duplication."
